Triumvirate Judgement

By David Scholes

sfgenreAfter the Judgement, Joy and I headed for the only place on Earth that might offer sanctuary.

“What gets me,” said Joy, “is these judges don’t carry out the sentence themselves.”
“Oh noo!” I replied, “that would be beneath them. They would never dirty their hands. World destroyers, but never responsible.”

As we approached the sanctuary I reflected on he who lived here. Orin — the only alien currently resident on Earth.

He reminded me of one of the sky fathers of Earth mythology. Orin was thought to be a traveller and benefactor, resting here on Earth for an indeterminate time.

Not long ago, in a quiet moment alone with him, Orin told me he was the son of parents who were each the sole survivors of their races. He did not name these races and I have never told anyone of his revelation.

“You know of the Judgement?” I enquired of Orin.

“Yes, Garth, it was unfortunate.” Orin used the past tense as if the sentence had already been carried out.

“Can you help us?” pleaded Joy.

“I have never been on a world at Judgement Time,” Orin responded. “There was an injustice here at the most basic level.” Again he spoke in the past tense.

“How do you propose to stop the Judgement?” I asked. “The Punishers seem an unstoppable force.”

“Oh, them?” Orin chuckled “I’m afraid they have already departed this plane of existence.”

That was all we ever got out of him about the fate of the Punishers.

“Does this mean the Triumvirate Judges will carry out their sentence themselves?” asked Joy.

Orin laughed. He sounded almost human. “I doubt it,” he continued to laugh, “the Judges would never dirty themselves and never pick on anyone their size. Just to be on the safe side, though, I will stay on Earth a little longer.”

***

Years later, Orin is still with us — as is the sentence contained in the Triumvirate Judgement. It seems there are no entities hereabouts willing to carry it out.

I have a feeling that the Punishers have more to worry about now than little old Earth.
