There once was a young engineer
Whose tastes were exceedingly queer.
He ate circuits for lunch,
Circuit-breakers for brunch
And he walked with a spin like a gear.
There once was a young astronaut
Whose knowledge of spacecraft was naught.
He flew round and round
Then crashed to the ground
Unhurt, but a little distraught.
There once was a nation at war
But no one knew what it was for.
Was it oil, or land
Or a long strip of sand?
No matter, they just wanted more.
Two nations at war wanted Peace.
Hostilities just had to cease.
But they were unable
To find the right table
To sit round to talk at their ease.
There once was a world without Space.
All things gathered up in one place.
If you needed your pen
You found it again
Where it was. Zero need to replace.
There once was a year without rain.
The grass withered dry on the plain.
Said one Musky man,
"We'll do what we can.
On Mars we'll evolve once again."
A robot who'd lost all his toes
Spent all his time looking for those.
When asked for a rhyme
He snapped "I've no time!
Now please scratch the itch on my nose."
Oh hark to the call, sharp and sweet,
Of socks seeking out their true feet.
Too thin or too fat,
Too smelly with that,
Some socks just curl up in defeat.
A Being came down from afar.
It saw us and sensed who we are.
It said, "They seem sweet
But not good to eat,"
And returned to its faraway star.
Said the fiery Sun to the Moon,
You know, you'll fall into me soon.
And so will the Earth,
Your planet of birth.
But the silence will be a great boon.
About the Author
Julie Cohen Wornan
I'm a native New Yorker but my home is in France. After I retired as a computer programmer, I discovered the delight of writing for those irrational beings called People. I think of fantasy as a window into another reality. And, I like to write very short stories because Small is Beautiful. Some of my work has appeared on Bewildering Stories <http://www.bewilderingstories.com/> and AntipodeanSF <http://www.antisf.com/>.
If you like my stories, you can download my e-book titled "The Mutual Reverse See," from www.amazon.fr/The-Mutual-Reverse-See-ebook/dp/B007VDEHHQ
Photography is another hobby of mine. You can see some of my photo compositions on http://www.flickr.com/photos/julieeiluj/ .
I feel deep concern about the future of our one and only planet. (You do too, right?). So I wrote a graphic novel, "Saving Our Planet," to explain climate change to young people. It's available on amazon in 4 languages. And a song, "The Change of Climate", to the tune of "The Sound of Silence"; you can listen to it here: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY5MKPGr8RA>.
