The crew watched
the moon
but didn’t land
orbiting it
ten times
looking closely
for telltale signs
it was indeed made of cheese
and populated
by burrowing and gnawing space-mice
and therefore a fledgling ecology
which might sustain humankind
in order to found our new empire
spreading like mayonnaise to the edges
of the galactic salad bowl
with comet-croutons on top
or that’s what they told me
back in 1968.
